Holland America Line's new standby program offers spontaneous travelers $50-a-day cruises. Holland America Line has a solution for budget-minded travelers who prefer more conventional and less intense itineraries. If a traveler is selected to sail, Holland America will alert them about a week before the embarkation date. According to Rough, this program is a "win-win" for Holland America and travelers living near the embarkation port. If a pre-booked guest has to cancel their vacation a week before sailing, standby travelers can fill this otherwise empty cabin, decreasing lost revenue.

Cruise lines are seemingly adopting the budget airline model: Charge a base fare and pile on extras. Newer cruise ships have "more opportunities to upsell" with restaurant and entertainment options. In fact, cruise lines have told their investors recently that passengers are embracing these add-on costs — and enhancing their bottom lines. "Cruise lines are creative to try to make you forget you actually bought some things nine months ago," Scholes said. There are almost 420 cruises sailing in 2023 for $60 a day or less. What you pay for is what you get: Some of these cheap cruise itineraries aren't necessarily glamorous. Cruise Sheet saw record bookings for 2022 itineraries from spring into early summer, Smith told Insider in July. But just because the brand is recognizable doesn't mean the cheap cruise ship will be as flashy as Royal Caribbean's new Wonder of the Seas. Similarly, in 2022, hospitality giant Margaritaville's converted a 30-year-old cruise ship into its first cruise vessel, the Margaritaville at Sea Paradise.
